The Protein-per-Dollar Cheatsheet

One number ranks every protein product honestly: dollars per 20 grams of protein. Here is the math worked through, and a blank table to run your own shortlist through in about two minutes.

The one number that ranks protein

  1. Total protein in the container = grams of protein per serving × servings per container.
  2. Dollars per gram of protein = price ÷ total protein grams.
  3. Dollars per 20g of protein = dollars per gram × 20 — one serving-sized unit to rank on.
  4. Rank every product on that single number. Lower is better value; the tub size and scoop tricks stop mattering.
  5. Then sanity-check: factor subscribe-and-save at its real price, and don't let "cheap but unverified" beat "cheap and third-party tested."

Take a $40 tub with 30 servings at 24g protein each. Total protein is 30 × 24 = 720g. Price ÷ protein is $40 ÷ 720 = $0.056/g, and × 20 = $1.11 per 20g protein.

Now a cheaper-looking $25 bag, 15 servings at 20g: total 300g, $25 ÷ 300 = $0.083/g, × 20 = $1.67 per 20g protein. The pricier tub is the better value by half a dollar per serving — which the sticker price never told you.
